Ayahuasca is an Amazonian brew of two or more botanical species; one of these plants is always the liana vine called ayahuasca (Banisteriopsis caapi or other species). The other plant or plants combined with ayahuasca contain dimethyltryptamine (DMT).
Ayahuasca has played a major role in indigenous societies all over the Amazonian territory of South America and found its use as a sacrament in syncretic religions of which Santo Daime, União do Vegetal (UDV), and Barquinia, are the most important.
Today it is more and more recognized for powerful psychosocial effects, including enhancement of understanding of self, relationships, role in society and place in world and cosmos. Ayahuasca is also used as a tool for the treatment of addiction, although it doesn’t have the physiological effects on withdrawal and sustained craving reduction, found in Iboga.
